Together We fight Crime

There have been at least five restaurant robberies in the past week with 8-10 armed robbers in each case. Their bold and rampant acts have put fears to the people.

The police plays a very vital role in such cases because whenever a crime occurs people place their hope and rely on the police to protect their properties, life and safety. It is high time for the police to take this opportunity to quickly tackle the crimes so that they can redeem the past negative perception of the people towards the police force.

However the responsibility of combating crime is not solely on the police but the people themselves should also do their part. Night shops and restaurants should strengthen the security measures. In addition to installation of CCTV, alarm systems, etc; application for police log in front of shops should be made for increase beat patrol purpose.

The public should be more alert, avoid going out at night is the best thing can do. If going out at night is unavoidable, reduce the wearing of gold and silver, and avoid carrying valuables so that one would not become the target of criminals.

The public should also be more vigilant. For personal safety reason, do not fight back when confronting with armed criminals. Instead note down the details of the culprits such as appeareance, body features, licence plate numbers etc for the police to trace the culprits more easily.

After the occurence of these robberies, the police has come up with proactive measures such as strengthening the patrols and manpower in Cheras area, including the deployment of police sniffing dogs, patrol motorcycles and cars. The public will feel safer with the stepping up of patrols in areas with high restaurant density and high crime rate.

In Cheras, the number of police patrol officers have now increased to 40 from 26, coupled with the assistance of the police dogs, deployed within 35km2 of Cheras police station covering Taman Taynton View, Taman Connaught, Taman Cheras, Taman Mutiara and Alam Damai.

This large scale daily patrol operation would able to deter and prevent the further occurence of crimes in these areas, but the people also must do their part in combating crime.
