Care to the AIDS patients

According to the latest statistics from January to June this year, there are 1,676 new HIV carriers in the country. The current figure is that 11.1 out of 100,000 population are AIDS patients. The health ministry is aiming for AIDS reduction to 11/100,000 by next year.

Looking back the past years record, Malaysia’s AIDS cases have been steadily increasing since first the infection was detected in 1986. The infection figure showed sign of reduction since 2003 with 28.5 persons per 100,000 to 11.4 persons per 100,000 in 2013.

Up till June this year, there are 103,348 HIV carriers and 20,833 AIDS patients in the country.

The continuous progress made in the medical field has enabled AIDS patients to interact normally with people and live a normal life, including shaking hand and making friends.

With 140 hospitals and over 2,000 government clinics around the country equipped with HIV/AIDS diagnostics facility, anyone could get examination in 15 minutes with complete confidentiality assured.

We should give AIDS or HIV patients support, motivation and encouragement for their misfortune. They need emotional support as much as medical treatment in fighting the disease.

In this respect, I must recongratulate a group of volunteers from variuos NGOs for having programmes to assist the AIDS and HIV patients.

Equally, the Government should have programmes to trace and it neccessary to be economically productive and contributing to the nation building.

We must remember that the AIDS / HIV patients do have many more good years ahead due to medical advancement.
